Muhlenberg Township is Hiring a Police Officer Near Reading, PA

Muhlenberg Police Department Job Application

The Muhlenberg Police Department is seeking applicants to join our dynamic and dedicated police force. The Township is intending to hire Individuals who have the drive to excel and the desire to have a positive impact on the community they serve.

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age by the application deadline
  • Be a U.S. citizen, be a high school graduate or graduate equivalency diploma (GED)
  • Have a Pennsylvania driver’s license before appointment.
  • Ability to complete a written and physical exam as outlined on the Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission https://mpoetc.psp.pa.gov/Pages/mpoetc.aspx
  • Must not have a disqualifying criminal record.
  • Pass all requirements in Act-57

The Township follows the Civil Service process. This includes a written and oral examination, a physical agility/ability test, medical and psychological exams, drug screen, and a thorough background investigation.

The Township offers an excellent salary and benefits package. Applicants who do not possess ACT 120 certification will begin at $51,716.45 while they are in the police academy. Upon graduation, they receive $82,741.86 as do applicants who already have Act 120 training. Police officers with experience elsewhere can receive a starting salary of up to $93,087.38, depending on qualifications.

A Preliminary Application and Medical Release Form must be completed and returned to the Muhlenberg Police Department by May 3, 2024 by 4:00 PM. There is NO CHARGE for taking the physical ability and written tests. The first part of the process will be a written test followed by a Physical Agility Test on SATURDAY, May 4, 2024 and registration will begin at 0830 at the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) located at 1111 Commons Blvd, Reading, PA 19605. The physical agility test will commence immediately following the written test at the Muhlenberg Senior High School Gym located at 400 Sharp Ave, Reading, PA 19605.

For both tests, applicants must produce proof of identification (Government issued photo ID required) at the testing sites, for admittance to the testing facilities. Applicants must also submit a medical release clearance form prior to being able to participate in the physical agility testing. Candidates will be notified of their test scores, when a candidate passes both tests, then a $40 fee will need to be paid in check or money order, made payable to Muhlenberg Township, to continue in the process. Applications may be picked up at the Muhlenberg Township Police office, 210 George Street, Reading, PA 19605 during normal business hours on Monday through Friday from 8AM to 4PM starting May 6, 2024 or downloaded from the website.
